QuickPress 1.4
This program is $15 shareware, register on-line at: <http://order.kagi.com/?WN>
Release 1.4 16/1- 1998

QuickPress is a small Macintosh application that lets you drag and drop text from
any application on your Desktop onto the Notepad on your Newton platform.
It's also possible to paste text from an application that doesn't support
Drag and Drop. You simply mark and copy the text you want to move and paste it over
the QuickPress window. That's all you have to do! Simple and powerful!

You can also transfer text from your Newton to your Mac's clipboard or make a new text file. QP currently supports the following stationaries: Notes, Outlines and Checklists. QP will try to locate text in an unknown stationary, but the format will probably be lost.
If you are a developer and would like QuickPress to support your stationary. Send us a message and we'll look into it.

This package includes the following files:
*QuickPress Server 1.4 for the Newton. (Newton 2.x only, QP 1.0 works with older systems)
*QuickPress Client 1.4 for MacOS.
*Readme text file.
*Tools folder with extensions.

What you need:
*Any Mac able to run Newton Backup Utility should work. You need the Apple Modem Tool, AppleTalk ADSP, and the Drag manager.

If you have problems, check the bottom of this document.
Beta Testers should remove the old Prefs file before launching the Mac application.

* We have a sendlist which you should subscribe to if you are interested in updates or information from Avanti. This is a very low traffic list, send a message to avanti2@kagi.com with the words "subscribe avanti" in the message body. You will receive an automatic notification when you have been added to the list. To remove your adress from the list, simple put the words "unsubscribe avanti" in the message body.

How it works

Install the QuickPress Server with your favorite package installer. The client should be ready to run as fast as youve unpacked the HQX file. We suggest that you keep the client icon on your desktop or in the Apple-menu so that it always is within reach.
When both applications are installed set their preferences so that they match each other. The preferences can be located under QP's InfoButton on the Newton and under "Preferences" at the Macintosh.
Hook up your Newton to the Mac with a standard Macintosh LocalTalk cable (i.e. serial cable). You can choose either the modem or printer port. You are now ready to go to work.

How to connect

Serial connection

Make sure that you've placed the Apple Modem Tool in your system folder.
First press the open connection button on the client then tap the connect button in the QuickPress application on the Newton, or just tap connect if the Mac is "listening".
Youre now connected! You can verify this by looking in the status drop down window. There you should see the name of the Newton that youve connected to and various other information like battery status.

AppleTalk connection

Make sure that you've placed the ADSP Tool in your system folder.
Initiate the connection from both the applications. On your Newton will a network Chooser appear, select the Macintosh that you would like to connect to by tapping it. Then close the Chooser. QuickPress will now connect.

QuickPress is now active and ready to transfer.

Actually dropping it

When you find some text that you want to transfer to your Newton simply mark the text and drag it to the QuickPress window. When the windows frame lights up, drop the text (or file/package). If the application that you want to drop from doesnt support Drag and Drop. Mark the text, copy it and paste it on the activated QuickPress window or press the paste button.
When youve dropped or pasted your text, it is on its way through the connection and will in a matter of seconds be visible on the Newton. You should always await a plunk sound from the Newton after youve dropped text. This sound means that the Newton has received all the text without any problems. You now have the option to keep the connection and continue to transfer or you can quit.

From Newton to the Mac

When you are connected you can send text from ANY application on your Newton that supports selecting. Since QuickPress is a floating window can you bring it with you when working in other applications. To transfer text from the Newton select the text and drop it in the QuickPress view or on the QP easy-access button in Notes. It is also possible to route a whole note from the Notes application. A Small QuickPress icon will show in the routing menu when you are connected. The QuickPress client puts the transfered text on your clipboard or into a file depending on your choice.

QuickPress has to be in the front if you want send text to the clipboard. QuickPress will remind you of this. You will hear a little "plonk" when the text is received and the paste button will get a little red arrow. If you've chosen the Clipboard as the text destination you can now paste it wherever you like.

Quit

To drop the connection you choose close. The connection will also close correctly if you quit. Optionally you can tap Disconnect on your Newton.

At the Newton

The dropped text will be created as a new note in the unfiled folder. QuickPress doesnt support different styles but it will have the same layout as it had in the original app. You can treat the new note as a standard Newton generated note.
If you want to give your "QuickPressed" notes a different look can you choose a font for QuickPress to use under Preferences.

Notes button to QuickPress

In the preferences you can choose to install an easy-access button to QuickPress in Notes. The button will place itself in Notes statusbar. By tapping the button you will open QuickPress without going to Extras first. When you are connected can you hide QuickPress by tapping the button once again. You bring QuickPress back by tapping the button again.

You can also QuickPress several notes, outlines and checklists at the same time from the overview. Just choose the ones you want to transfer from the overview and then tap the QuickPress icon in the routing menu.

Problems

-I can't get a connection!

Do the server and client communication preferences match?
You may have selected the wrong port.
Is the Apple Modem Tool and the AppleTalk ADSP Tool installed in the system folder?
It could be another application blocking the chosen port, try to terminate such apps.
On older PowerBooks with built-in modem, you should set your preferences to "External Modem" when using serial connections over the modemport.

-My text is getting cut off, when I'm sending from the Mac!

This could happen If youre trying to drop a lot of text (more than 12000 characters). This is due to the Notepad's memory limitations for each note. Try to stay within a couple of pages of text. If there is a problem, simply wait a while for the time-out and then reconnect.

-My text is getting cut off, when I'm sending from the Newton!

There might be some inktext in your notes. QuickPress will only send real text.
If you're notes are mixed with drawings and regular text QuickPress will sort out the text, correctly.
